I would like to thank my wife, Amparo Minaya, for embarking with me on this adventure. Her patience and understanding cannot be described in words.

I would also like to thank my parents, Tilly Roberts and José Zagal, for their all their support of both myself as well as my family during our stay in Atlanta.

This research also owes a lot to Amy Bruckman. Without her support I would not have been able to take the little “detours” that led me to find out what I’m most passionate about.

I would also like to thank Mark Guzdial, Janet Kolodner, Jesper Juul, and Michael Mateas. Their comments, questions, and insight have inspired me and helped me grow personally and professionally.

Thanks also to the GVU graduate students, members of the LST community, and current and former members of the ELC Lab. Their support, feedback, ideas, and friendship have been invaluable.

I would also like to thank the staff of the College of Computing and GVU for their help with all those “little” details along the way.

Drew Davidson and John Dessler at ETC Press. Thanks for trusting!

Finally, I would also like to thank all of the students and teachers who participated in my research studies. None of this would have happened without them.
